Doug Friedlander is a former student from Duke University, and I recently attended his wedding accompanied by another former student, Georg Buehler. Just to get to Helena we had to fly to Memphis, rent a car, and then drive through a series of one horse towns and two lane roads for a couple of hours until we crossed the Mississippi River. During our pilgrimage we passed the time pondering a single question: What was Doug, the Duke graduate and proverbial “nice Jewish boy” from New York City, doing, in of all places, Helena, Arkansas, in the first damn place?
